Solar Attic Fan Installation Chicago

Solar Attic Fan Installation in Chicagoland

A solar attic fan can help reduce attic heat and manage moisture when the roof system is the right fit. Green Attic Roofing inspects roof conditions and attic ventilation before recommending a fan.

From ~$750 installed. Roof-safe installation confirmed after inspection.

Should You Install a Solar Attic Fan?

A solar attic fan is not a one-size-fits-all roofing upgrade. It works best when the attic has balanced intake ventilation and the roof is ready for a properly flashed fan installation.

Attic Solar Fan for Smarter Ventilation

  • Roof condition around the installation area
  • Flashing and sealing requirements
  • Sun exposure and fan placement
  • Soffit intake and attic airflow path
  • Existing roof ventilation balance
  • Moisture signs under the roof deck
  • Whether solar-only or low-voltage 24V backup power makes sense
If inspection shows the fan is not needed, the cost is $0.

Standard Solar Fan Specs

Our standard solar attic fan is sized for typical Chicago-area attics and designed for roof-mounted ventilation with no grid power required for a standard install.

Cooler Homes Start with Better Attic Ventilation

Standard fan rating: 2,020 CFM
Sizing target: move the air in a typical Chicago-area attic 10–12 times per hour
Power: built-in solar panel with no grid power required for standard install
Motor: quiet brushless DC motor
Installation type: roof-mounted solar attic fan
Optional backup: low-voltage 24V backup power option; a small transformer connects to the home’s existing power, and built-in temperature and humidity sensors activate backup operation only when attic conditions reach the set limits
Warranty: Green Attic 10-year warranty

Solar vs. Electric: Which Should You Install?

Comparison of solar attic fans and electric attic fans
Solar Attic Fan Electric (120V) Fan
Installation No wiring, no electrician, no permit (typical) Requires electrician + permit
Operating cost $0 Adds to your electric bill
DOE Building America preference Recommended (lower CFM, no humid night air) Higher negative pressure risk
Works during power outages Yes (during daylight) No

Already have a working electric fan? Don't replace it yet. When it dies, and it will, replace it with a solar unit, not another electric one.

The 24V Backup Power Option

For heavily shaded roofs or homes with high humidity loads, Green Attic Roofing may recommend a low-voltage 24V backup power option.

A small transformer connects to the home’s existing power, and built-in temperature and humidity sensors trigger backup operation only when attic conditions cross set thresholds.

This option is not a battery backup or AC/DC inverter. It is a low-voltage backup power option designed for sensor-triggered operation with minimal grid draw, only when needed.

A solar-only fan installation typically does not require a permit because there is no line-voltage wiring. The 24V backup power option may require a permit and additional install fee depending on your local authority’s rules and whether a nearby power source is already available. We confirm both in your written estimate before any work begins.

Roof-Safe Installation and Warranty

A solar attic fan is installed through the roof surface, so flashing and sealing matter.

Green Attic Roofing checks the roof condition, installation area, roof pitch, and ventilation setup before installation. The goal is to support attic airflow without creating roof or ventilation issues.

Green Attic 10-year warranty: free repair or replacement on all fan components. Final coverage confirmed in your written estimate.

Do Solar Fans Void Roof Warranty

Will the solar fan void my roof warranty? The solar fan should not void your roof warranty when it is properly installed according to roofing and manufacturer requirements. It may help reduce roof-deck heat and moisture stress when the attic is properly ventilated.
